Astrology 101: Birth Charts

Everything is a cycle. Astrology reflects the zodiac, seasons, and daily movement of the planets and moons in the universe. This cycle is attached to us and affects our daily lives and our lives as a whole.

What is a Birth Chart?

The birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born.

Get your birth chart here - https://astro-charts.com, and explore what all the elements, planets, and houses mean for you and your chart.

You will need your birth time, date, and location to receive an accurate birth chart.

Why should your birth chart stay private?

The birth chart serves as a tool to help you connect with your natural preferences and point you toward your highest potential. With this also comes information about some of the challenges you may face in your lifetime.

When you give others access to your birth chart, you give access to your innermost world.

If you are comfortable with someone potentially being in your head (or thinking they are one step ahead of you) predicting your every move, go ahead and share it. But don't do it 😬.

All of the information in your chart can help YOU uncover and discover something more about yourself.

We will be looking at some of the components of the birth chart. The original order of the zodiac reflects its natural cycle. Your personalized birth chart will have different rulers and meanings because it reflects the possibilities for you in this human experience.

Astrology can get complicated fast, but here I simple basic principles to help you gain more insight about your Earth school curriculum if you decide to step into this journey.

Determinism VS Free Will

If you believe it, then it will be your truth.

Before we step further into this information, it is essential to address the conversation about fate and free will. Some believe that if the stars reflect a direction for my life, does that mean that everything is predetermined?

I would say NO.

If you never step into embracing the change this journey (aka life) will bring, it is hard for you to release control and allow yourself to expand your life.

You have the choice to continue to perpetuate old patterns or to learn from the past and shape your future to reflect your needs and desire.

If you never notice what you want - how can you begin to work toward it?

For the skeptics here, don't see this as an outline for your life. Instead, let it serve you as a tool to get an insight into yourself and your natural preference.

You can change your life! Today is an opportunity for you to embody who you want to be.

No one can tell you how to live your life. You have to take the lead and be the designer of your life and the lead character simultaneously.

With that addressed, let's dive into the parts of the birth chart. [link to these parts of the blog]

The 4 Elements

The four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) hold specific characteristics. Depending on how many signs you have in your chart within each of the four elements, you may feel more connected to these characteristics that may not be apart of your Sun Sign (more on this soon).

The thing about our birth charts is that they are all unique to us. Just because you have the same Sun Sign or similar Big 3 (again, more on this soon), we are all affected differently because of the combinations of signs present within our chart.

By looking at the most prevalent element in your chart, you can learn more about your natural preferences.

  • Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius - Bold, Adventurous, Energetic

  • Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn - Sensual, Practical, Material

  • Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius - Thinkers, Innovators, Communicators

  • Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces - Compassionate, Instinctual, Emotional

Modes of Zodiac Signs

Depending on what season and time of that season your sign is in the sun location, you can again learn about your natural preferences.

  • Spring Signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini

Hold energy of Initiation & Beginnings

  • Summer Signs: Cancer, Leo, Virgo

Hold energy of Expansion & Boldness

  • Autumn Signs: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius

Hold energy of Connective & Introspection

  • Winter Signs: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

Hold energy of Reflection & Rejuvenation.

There are three zodiac signs within each season. Their placement (beginning, middle, end within the season) holds different attributes. Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable are known as the modes of zodiac signs.

Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

These signs mark the beginning of the season holding actionable, enterprising, assertive energy.

Fixed Signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

These signs mark the middle of the season holding reliable, consistent, stubborn energy.

Mutable Signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

These signs mark the end of the season holding compromising, flexible, adaptable energy.

Yin & Yang Energy

YES, You are affected by all of the zodiac signs! How you interact with everything and everyone in the world reflects the energy you are radiating.

Each sign has a natural preference for one energy over the other. It's vital to notice which is dominant in your Sun Sign and Birth Chart so you can see where you need to create balance in your life.

All Fire & Air Signs hold Yang Energy.

They are extroverted and radiate energy outward.

Yang Energy may look like fearlessness in moving towards a life that allows enjoyment to all this world has to offer.

Holding Yang energy gives Fire and Air signs the ability to transfer inspiration and positivity to others to experience.

All Earth & Water Signs hold Yin Energy.

They are introverted and radiate energy inwardly.

Yin Energy may look like drawing people and experience to your life rather than intentionally seeking it out.

Holding Yin energy gives Earth and Water signs an ability to gather people around a shared goal through reflective and receptive observation.

For Example: If there is naturally more masculine energy in your 10th House, you can remind yourself to be kind and gentle to yourself as you navigate your career path (more about houses below).

Noticing the type of energy held in an area of your life serves as a tool to help you reconnect with yourself. You can reclaim a sense of control by gaining insight on where to create balance in your life.

The Big Three

You are a complex soul living in a human experience. You are a combination of your Sun, Moon, & Rising Signs.

Your Sun Sign represents your individuality. The sun expresses through your personality, ego, and vitality (chi or life force energy). The Sun Sign is determined by the position of the sun when you were born.

Your Moon Sign represents your inner world. The moon reflects your mind, emotions, and heart (love energy). The Moon Sign is determined by the position of the moon when you were born.

Your Rising Sign represents the world's perception of you. The world is reflecting you the energy you are expressing outwardly (soul energy). The Rising Sign is determined by the current sign rising in the east at the exact time you were born.

Chart Ruler:

Your Rising Sign is your chart ruler. The chart ruler can point to a common theme that will be consistent throughout your life. Explore more about Chart Rulers in their relationship to houses here https://cafeastrology.com/natal/rulersofhousesinhouses.html
